The Argus Eye Reduces Downtime and Improves Health and Safety at Work

The Argo2.5D camera system from FusionSystems GmbH simplifies the monitoring of hazardous areas for machinery and installations

11.03.2008

When a machine or system needs to be shut down during production for safety reasons, this often costs a great deal of time and money. The new Argo2.5D camera-based security system, from the Chemnitz company FusionSystems GmbH based in the Technologie Centrum Chemnitz (TCC) should provide the solution. This system detects and distinguishes between permissible and non-permissible directions of motion by objects. The warning and protection zones, which can be defined with flexibility, simplify the continuous monitoring of areas around conveyor belts and assembly lines, packaging machines and in the areas surrounding industrial robots.

The permissible movement directions – for example the required movements of machine parts – are taught to the camera system by showing them to the system within the field of observation. If a prohibited movement occurs in the system – for example a hand in the warning zone – then the monitored assembly line can be slowed down. If a hand appears in a protected zone, the line will be stopped. "This ensures greater safety in the working area and helps to avoid unnecessary downtime. In addition, the Argo2.5D is more practical and easier to set up than previous monitoring systems", explains Dr. Ullrich Scheunert, Managing Director at FusionSystems GmbH.

This system is based on the results of research, as it is used at the Professorship for Communications Technology and at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Driver Assistance Systems, in short the I- FAS (http://www.i-fas.de), at the Chemnitz University of Technology, for object detection in the surroundings of a vehicle. "Using similar procedures, such as the detection and position calculation of pedestrians, Argo2.5D can monitor the movement directions for the entire area in real time. This innovation shows that the collaboration of businesses with the university pays off, even after a company has got off the ground", explains Scheunert, who until the end of 2007, was working at the Professorship for Communications Technology at the Chemnitz University of Technology.

FusionSystems GmbH is a spin-off of the Chemnitz University of Technology and, since its founding in 2005 at the TCC, has focused on image processing and sensor data fusion. With its industrial image processing, FusionSystems is a service provider for machine and specialist machine engineering, as well as related branches of industry. For those areas where man meets machine - in production systems or in daily life - FusionSystems designs recognition/detection systems that increase the safety and efficacy of collaborations for both man and machine.
